Here, you'll find answers to the most common questions about the HomeShare program, including how to sign up, what to expect as a host or sponsor, and other important details. - Who runs the HomeShare Massachusetts Program?
HomeShare Massachusetts is overseen by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. - What are the host requirements?
To be eligible, hosts must:- Commit to providing 12 months of accommodation to guest families.
- Agree to participate in the HomeBASE program by registering as a landlord with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Have a clean Certn background check.
- Provide reasonable access to shared spaces.
- Participate in a compatibility assessment.
- Complete a HomeShare Agreement.
- Hosts are also required to provide the following documents:
- A signed HomeShare lease.
- A signed W-9 form.
- Proof of ownership (e.g., deed or mortgage statement) if the host owns the home.
- If the host is a renter, proof of landlord approval.
- What are the sponsor requirements?

- What is required of hosts and sponsors that participate in HomeShare?
Hosts and sponsors must:- Participate in trainings.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and flexibility.
- Engage with case management services.
- Maintain open communication with the guest family and program staff.
- Commit to HomeShare program guidelines outlined in the HomeShare Agreement (hosts) or code of conduct (sponsors).
- Do HomeShare hosts receive compensation?
Host compensation is not required, but hosts have the option to receive up to 50% of their living expenses to help offset costs. - Who are the guest families?
Guest families eligible for HomeShare are those who qualify for Massachusetts Emergency Assistance Family Shelter Programs. You can find more information about Emergency Assistance programs here. - Do guest families receive background checks?
Yes, guest families undergo Massachusetts CORI and SORI background checks. If any adult in the family does not pass, they will not be eligible for HomeShare Massachusetts. - Where can I learn more about the HomeBASE program?

Hosts must commit to providing or co-signing accommodations for one year. - What kind of extra space do I need in my home to be a host?
Your home should have a private bedroom and, ideally, a private bathroom. Common spaces can be shared. The space requirement is 150 square feet for the first person and 100 square feet for each additional person, including the bedroom and shared living space. - Can host families require their HomeShare guests to do chores or other tasks in exchange for living with
the host?
No. The only form of compensation for the host is a monthly stipend from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Hosts may not require any labor or services from guests as a condition of living in the home. - Does the HomeShare work?
Yes. HomeShare programs have been successful in Massachusetts for many years. Vermont has also had a successful HomeShare program for 40 years. Additionally, several European countries have implemented effective HomeShare programs. - What kind of support will I receive as a host or sponsor?
We are committed to supporting you. You will receive:- Training, mentoring, and coaching.
- Access to learning collaboratives.
- Access to a 24/7 helpline.
- Is there a formal agreement, like a lease?
Yes. Hosts and guests are required to sign a lease and a HomeShare Agreement that details the hosts’ and families’ responsibilities. Sponsors are required to co-sign a lease and complete a code of conduct form. - How will I be matched with a family?
HomeShare staff will meet with you in person, visit your home (if a host), and review your survey response to learn about you and the type of guest that would be the best fit. We gather similar information from families applying to be HomeShare guests. Using a combination of matching technology and human intuition, we strive to create matches that work for everyone.
